TheWesternSaharaconflicthasproventobeoneofthemostprotractedandintractablestrugglesfacingtheinternationalcommunity.PittinglocalnationalistdeterminationagainstMoroccanterritorialambitions,thedisputeisfurthercomplicatedbyregionaltensionswithAlgeriaandthegeo-strategicconcernsofmajorglobalplayers,includingtheUnitedStates,France,andtheterritory’sformercolonialruler,Spain.Sincetheearly1990s,theUNSecurityCouncilhasfailedtofindaformulathatwilldelicatelybalancetheseinterestsagainstWesternSahara’slong-deniedrighttoaself-determinationreferendumasoneofthelastUN-recognizedcolonies.Thewidely-laudedfirsteditionwasthefirstbook-lengthtreatmentoftheissueintheprevioustwodecades.ZunesandMundyexaminedtheorigins,evolution,andresilienceoftheWesternSaharaconflict,deployingadiversearrayofsourcesandfirsthandknowledgeoftheregiongainedfrommultipleresearchvisits.Shiftinggeographicalframes--local,regional,andinternational--providedforarobustanalysisofthestakesinvolved.Withtherenewalofthearmedconflict,continueddiplomaticstalemate,growingwavesofnonviolentresistanceintheoccupiedterritory,andtherecentU.S.recognitionofMorocco’sannexation,thisnewrevisedandexpandedpaperbackeditionbringsusup-to-dateonalong-forgottenconflictthatisfinallycapturingtheworld’sattention.
